Alternative Chiropractic

Second Edition Preface

It has been over a decade since the first edition of this text came into print. That’s a long time and much has been developed to be of interest to the chiropractic physician. Unfortunately too many of us have chosen to forget that the profession we entered was founded by D.D. Palmer because he claimed to have restored the hearing of Harvey Lillard, not a crick in his neck.

Our professional reticence to claim our heritage is reflected in the way the others in the alternative healing arts view us. With rare exceptions we are not considered for much more than backaches in alternative texts. Homeopathics for asthma, acupuncture for digestive disorders, color therapy for heart problems, herbs for adrenal problems, flowers for emotional disorders, gem stones for blood pressure and, of course, chiropractic for that bad back. What makes this all the more distressing is the osteopathic profession declares their ability to influence the function of just about every organ in the body through the somatovisceral/viscerosomatic reflexes (innate?) by osteopathic manipulation of the osseous structures and no one says a word. But let a chiropractor claim the same and he or she is libel to be branded a “quack.” The result is a whole new breed of “play it safe” backache-only doctors entering the profession.

This text is not for the faint hearted. It’s for the true physician who really wants to take the responsibility for being a primary care family doctor. This text is also not meant for those who feel that all they have to do is adjust the spine and the body will innately be cured of every disease conceivable. The chiropractic adjustment is a powerful therapeutic tool—the cornerstone of our profession, the mechanical bridge that influences the neural and vascular components that influence, directly or indirectly, the function of every organ in the body. Yet, it’s also physical therapy, exercise, nutrients, herbs and homeopathics, which act as powerful synergists to give faster and even more substantial results.

The medicine practiced today takes on an essentially adversarial role. The human body to the allopathic physician represents a battlefield, a “bad body” that must be punished. The body speaks to us twenty-four hours a day and never lies. Its “language” is expressed through symptoms. To the average M.D. that language must be suppressed with noxious chemicals, cut with knives, or it must be burned if necessary, to be taught a lesson. To those in the natural healing arts, the symptom “voice” is listened to and used as a guide to enable us to give the body what it needs to do the tasks that are needed to maintain optimum health. This natural approach should always be the first to be considered, then, if not the primary, an energetic form of synergism.
